Flu Season Predicted to be a “BAD” One

At a seminar I attended one month ago, the doctor who was teaching mentioned that in Australia, where she is from, people experienced a particularly nasty flu that took many of them several weeks to recover. She predicted it will be coming here within a few weeks.  I already know of several people who have been sick with flu symptoms.  For those of us who work, this would be very disrupting for us and for our employers or businesses.  For those with children, this would be very disrupting for our families.  And for those of us who are single, this would be awful.

Thus, now is the time to prepare yourself for this upcoming season.  Here are my recommendations.

  1. Stop eating sugar and processed sweets.
Sugar suppresses the immune system for hours after eating it.  We need our immune system to be functioning at full capacity through-out this winter season.
  2. Eat a well-balanced diet,
focusing on as wide a variety of vegetables as you can imagine.  Some authorities speak of a rainbow of colors in our diet, i.e. eat a variety of foods with many different colors represented.  An example of this would be yellow squash with red onion with bell pepper.
  3. Get adequate sleep.
Most people really do need at least 8 hours of sleep per night. We are not wimps if we need more.  Sleep gives our body time to heal, so do not deprive it of that opportunity..
  4. Take your supplements.
Minimum supplementation includes a multivitamin and mineral, an essential fatty acid, and vitamin C.  Remember that our food does not contain all the nutrients we need.  Plus our digestive tracts are quite compromised by adulthood.  This is a quick summary of why we need supplementation.
  5. Wash your hands, frequently.
I do not recommend  antibacterial hand wipes on a long term basis.  They will disrupt the normal flora ecology on our skin which protects us from infection.
  6. Take additional supplementation for the season:
    This can include the following:
Pro Boost: Take 1 per day
A good Echinacea e.g. Echinacea Premium from MediHerb: 1 or 2 per day
Oscillococcinum: 1/3 tube 3 times per week
Mushroom combination: Immunity from Nikken: 1 or 2 two times per day
Garlic: raw or roasted several times per week, or as a high quality supplement
Probiotics: beneficial bacteria for the GI tract, daily
Extra antioxidants: in the form of a supplement or food or as one of the many juice combinations now available.
    Vitamin C to bowel tolerance
  7. If you get sick:
Use some or all of the following according to your individual make up:
Ultimate Viral Defense or UVD Plus: 1 capsule 3 times per day
ProBoost: 1 packet 2 or 3 times per day
Echinacea Premium: 1 tablet 2 or even 3 times per day, or Insure Herbal by Zand  1: 3 to 4 times per day.
Oscillococcinum: 1/3 tube 3 times per day
Allicillin (Designs for Health garlic) or Garlic 5000 (MediHerb): 2 to 4 tablets or capsules per day.
Probiotics:  Every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Sambucol: (Elderberry Extract) 1 tsp 3 times per day
Vitamin C: to bowel tolerance (just less than the amount resulting in loose stools)
    Vitamin A: 100,000 units for 3 days only .
Zinc: 75 mg the first day, and 25 mg each day after for the first 5 to 7 days

    Rest!

    Watch Happy or Pleasant TV.

The purpose of this list is to give you examples. There are many wonderful remedies, herbal, homeopathic and nutritional, available.  Find what works for you and have them available in your health first aid kit.

Best wishes for a healthy fall and winter 2007-2008 season.
